Two Sisters Wounded After Dispute Turns Into Gunfire

Police said three people in a suspect vehicle were detained, and another man was held on an unrelated warrant.

ATLANTA, GA — Two adult sisters were shot early Thursday at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex after police said a dispute involving several people turned violent as a vehicle left the scene.

Atlanta police responded around 2:02 a.m. Thursday to the 1800 block of Myrtle Drive SW, where the Harmony Plaza Apartments are located. Officers found two women with gunshot wounds. Both were alert, conscious and breathing. Police said one woman was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a graze wound to her left foot. The other woman had a gunshot wound to her left forearm and declined medical treatment because the injury was not considered life-threatening.

Investigators said the shooting followed a large dispute at the apartment complex. A small gray vehicle arrived during the argument, and police said a woman inside was the ex-girlfriend of one of the men involved. The dispute centered on property, according to preliminary information released by police. As the vehicle began leaving the area, police said the woman’s alleged brother fired several shots from inside the vehicle toward the crowd. The two sisters were hit by the gunfire.

Police later responded to another report of shots fired on Venetian Drive SW, where they found the vehicle believed to be connected to the apartment shooting. Officers located the vehicle in the 1500 block of Venetian Drive SW and detained three people who had been inside it, including the ex-girlfriend and the alleged shooter. A fourth man was also taken into custody on an unrelated warrant, police said. Early reports differed on the number of arrests, with one account saying three people were arrested and another saying four people were taken into custody.

The case remained active Thursday as investigators worked to sort out each person’s role in the confrontation. Police had not released the names or ages of the two wounded women, the alleged shooter or the other people detained. Officials also had not announced formal charges tied to the shooting in the first reports. The condition of the woman taken to Grady Memorial Hospital was described as nonlife-threatening, and police said the second woman did not need hospital treatment.

The shooting added to a series of recent gunfire investigations in southwest Atlanta. Less than two weeks earlier, officers responded around 11:50 p.m. May 23 to the 500 block of Lee Street SW after two men were shot. In that case, one man was wounded in the shoulder and another was wounded in the hand. Police said both men were taken to a hospital. Authorities did not link the Lee Street case to the Myrtle Drive shooting, but both incidents drew police to southwest Atlanta neighborhoods after reports of multiple people wounded.

At Harmony Plaza Apartments, the early-morning response moved from the apartment complex to Venetian Drive as officers searched for the suspect vehicle. Local crews at the Venetian Drive scene saw officers place three people into squad cars before driving away. Police said the vehicle’s occupants were detained after the second shots-fired call led officers to the area. Investigators did not say whether a gun was recovered, whether any homes or vehicles were struck, or how many shots were fired.

The next step is for investigators to review witness statements, physical evidence and any available video from the apartment complex and nearby streets. Police had not announced a briefing or court date in the first reports. The case could move to formal charges after detectives determine who fired the weapon and whether others in the vehicle or at the scene had criminal responsibility.

As of Saturday, the two women’s injuries were not considered life-threatening, and the investigation remained open. Police had not released additional names, charging details or a final arrest count tied directly to the shooting.
