Two Teen Girls Arrested in High School Shooting Plot

Police said the 15-year-olds researched school shootings and discussed obtaining weapons, but investigators found no weapons during searches.

CORONA, CA — Two 15-year-old girls have been arrested after authorities said an investigation uncovered months of discussions about a potential shooting at Corona High School, including conversations about obtaining weapons for an attack.

The investigation began Oct. 6 after the FBI alerted the Corona Police Department to online social media communications involving a possible threat to the Riverside County high school, according to Corona police. Authorities first arrested a 15-year-old girl who attends Corona High School. Investigators later identified and arrested a second 15-year-old girl who attends nearby Norco High School.

Police said detectives served numerous search warrants involving electronic devices and communications and searched several residences in Riverside County. Evidence gathered during the investigation indicated that the two teenagers had spent several months researching school shootings and discussing how they could carry out a potential attack at Corona High School on an unspecified future date, authorities said.

Investigators also found communications in which the girls allegedly discussed ways to obtain weapons, police said. Authorities said they had not succeeded in obtaining them, and no weapons were found during the searches. Officials have not publicly identified a specific date for any alleged attack or disclosed a possible motive.

Both teenagers remained in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, according to Corona police. Because they are juveniles, authorities have not publicly released their names. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case, police said. The review will determine how prosecutors proceed based on the evidence gathered by investigators.

The case is being investigated by the Corona Police Department in partnership with the FBI, Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and Corona-Norco Unified School District. Authorities have described the investigation as ongoing and have not released the social media platform involved or detailed the full contents of the communications recovered by detectives.

FBI Director Kash Patel said federal investigators identified online communications discussing a planned school attack and worked with local authorities to identify those involved. He said the suspected act of targeted violence was “disrupted before anyone was harmed.” No injuries were reported in connection with the alleged plot.

Students arriving at Corona High School after news of the arrests became public expressed shock about the allegations, according to local reporting. The school remained the focus of the investigation, but authorities have not announced that investigators found weapons on campus or that an attack had begun. The allegations concern preparations and discussions investigators say were uncovered before any violence occurred.

Authorities have released limited information about how far the alleged planning had progressed beyond the research, communications and discussions about obtaining weapons described by police. They also have not announced evidence establishing a motive. The accusations remain allegations, and neither teenager has been found guilty of a crime.

The investigation remained active Thursday as the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case. Police have not announced a court schedule or additional arrests, and officials said the alleged attack had been discussed for an unspecified future date.
