Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine has expressed disappointment with the Vatican’s diplomatic representative, Apostolic Nuncio Visvaldas Kulbokas, following remarks made by Pope Francis urging the country to consider negotiations with Russia. The foreign ministry in Kyiv summoned Kulbokas to convey their dissatisfaction with the Pope’s comments.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that despite facing limited support from allies, Ukraine’s position on the battlefield was showing signs of stabilization after recent setbacks. However, tensions arose after the Pope’s remarks about the necessity of considering surrender, which Ukraine interpreted as endorsing capitulation.
The Pope’s comments, referencing the white flag as a symbol of surrender, sparked controversy as Ukraine emphasized its determination to resist Russian aggression. The Vatican later clarified that the Pope’s intention was to promote peace through negotiation, not submission to the enemy.
Kyiv criticized the Pope’s remarks, emphasizing the importance of global solidarity in upholding international law and defending against aggression. Ukraine reiterated its commitment to determining the outcome of the conflict independently and refusing to capitulate to Russia.
President Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s efforts to fortify defensive positions, spanning over 2,000km, in response to the ongoing threat posed by Russia. Despite challenges in securing necessary resources, Ukraine remained steadfast in its resolve to defend its territory.
Intelligence experts warned US senators that without additional support, Ukraine could lose significant ground to Russia in 2024. The CIA Director emphasized the need for continued assistance to prevent Kyiv from facing ammunition shortages and dwindling resources.
While the US has been a key supporter of Ukraine, aid has faced delays due to political deadlock over a foreign aid bill. President Zelensky attributed previous setbacks to inadequate weapon supplies, underscoring the urgency of military assistance to combat Russian aggression.
