Oxford, Mississippi – The University of Mississippi is conducting a student conduct investigation following what it described as actions with “hostility and racist overtones” during a recent campus demonstration. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, sparked heated confrontations between pro-Palestinian protesters and a larger group of counterprotesters, as shown in videos circulating on social media.
One disturbing video depicted a Black woman engaged in a verbal altercation with a group of white male counterprotesters, during which one individual made offensive gestures imitating a monkey towards her. The crowd also chanted “Lock her up!” in the background. University Chancellor Glenn Boyce addressed the incident in a letter to the university community, acknowledging that some statements made during the protests were offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable. As a result, an investigation has been initiated into the conduct of one student, with the possibility of further inquiries.
In response to the incident, the fraternity Phi Delta Theta released a statement on Saturday announcing the removal of a member from its Mississippi Alpha chapter for their involvement in the “racist actions in the video.” The fraternity emphasized that such behavior goes against its core values. Additionally, university student government leaders issued a letter condemning the derogatory remarks made during the protest, emphasizing that they contradict the institution’s values.
