Video Shows Gunman Before Teen Shot Near Houston

Montgomery County officials say both the accused shooter and the wounded 17-year-old now face charges.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — Newly released video shows a Houston-area man pointing a long gun before a 17-year-old was shot Saturday in the Kings Colony neighborhood, where deputies later recovered about 31 shell casings, authorities said.

The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to the neighborhood near I-69 and SH 99 and led to charges against both the accused gunman and the teen who was wounded. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said the first reports suggested an active shooter with multiple victims, but investigators later said only one person was shot. The case remained under investigation Monday as detectives reviewed video, witness accounts and evidence from Nottingham Road.

Deputies responded about 4:20 p.m. Saturday to the 19000 block of Nottingham Road after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire in Kings Colony, a neighborhood near Roman Forest in east Montgomery County. The sheriff’s office said the incident began as an altercation between Juan Ayala-Montero, 60, and 17-year-old Uziel Samano. After the dispute, investigators said, Ayala-Montero began pointing a firearm at several people in the neighborhood and fired in multiple directions. The sheriff’s office said in an update that witnesses tried to calm the situation and persuade the armed man to put down the weapon, but he kept firing.

Video released after the shooting shows residents outside as the armed man moves near a fence and points a long gun in the direction of people nearby. Authorities said the footage helped show the chaotic moments before law enforcement arrived. Samano was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He was later released, officials said. Ayala-Montero also sustained minor injuries, though officials did not say exactly how he was hurt. Investigators said no deputies were injured during the response, and no other gunshot victims were found despite the first reports that several people had been shot.

When deputies arrived, officials said they could still hear gunfire in the area. Ayala-Montero barricaded himself inside a home, prompting a response from the Montgomery County SWAT team. The sheriff’s office later announced that the scene had been secured and that the suspect was in custody. Deputies set up a media staging area at a gas station near FM 1485 and Forest Drive and told the public to stay away from the area while officers cleared the neighborhood. Authorities said Ayala-Montero surrendered without further incident after SWAT officers arrived.

Investigators recovered about 31 fired shell casings from the scene, which officials said supported witness accounts that shots had been fired toward homes and residents. The sheriff’s office said the shooting followed the altercation between Ayala-Montero and Samano, but officials have not released a full account of what started the dispute. The new video added to the evidence under review, but authorities said detectives were still interviewing witnesses and examining what happened before, during and after the shooting. Officials also corrected the early account that several people had been wounded, saying that information was not accurate.

Ayala-Montero was charged with felony deadly conduct by discharging a firearm. Jail information cited by authorities showed his bond was set at $80,000. The sheriff’s office said he had a criminal history, had previously been deported from the United States and had a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer. Samano, the teen who was shot, was charged with false report to a peace officer, a misdemeanor. Investigators said he initially gave untruthful information that hindered the investigation. Officials did not release more detail about the alleged false report.

The neighborhood response unfolded during Memorial Day weekend, when residents were home and witnesses reported hearing repeated gunfire. One witness video account described the suspect firing toward people outside, and other accounts said neighbors tried to get him to stop before deputies arrived. The sheriff’s office said the shooting sent officers from multiple units into the area as residents sheltered and callers relayed fast-changing information. The scene was later declared secure after Ayala-Montero surrendered and investigators began marking shell casings and gathering statements.

The case now moves through Montgomery County’s court system as detectives continue to build a timeline from videos, 911 calls and witness interviews. Ayala-Montero remained in custody after the shooting, and Samano had been released from the hospital. Authorities said the investigation remained open Monday, May 25.
