HOUSTON — A 28-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with manslaughter following the fatal stabbing of Houston rapper Krystal Jordan, an artist known professionally as Judy World and Play Girl Judy.
The stabbing happened at approximately 9:55 a.m. Saturday, July 11, in the 11900 block of Bat Sheva Lane, a residential area on Houston’s south side. Houston police identified the accused woman as Kayla Wynita Rodgers, who is also 28 years old.
Officers responding to the reported stabbing found Jordan suffering from at least one stab wound while a bystander attempted to provide first aid. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators allege Rodgers stabbed Jordan in the leg during a confrontation. Despite the location of the injury, the wound proved fatal. Authorities have not publicly released Jordan’s official cause of death or provided a detailed account of what led to the confrontation.
Police said Rodgers remained at the scene after the stabbing. Officers detained her without incident, and she was later booked into the Harris County Jail on a manslaughter charge. Court records show that the criminal case remains pending, and the charge represents an allegation rather than a conviction.
Jordan’s mother, Keia Jordan, told FOX 26 that Rodgers is the sister of her daughter’s boyfriend. She said the family believes the circumstances warrant a murder charge instead of manslaughter and is demanding justice for Jordan’s death. Prosecutors could potentially reevaluate the charge as investigators collect additional evidence, although authorities have not announced whether an upgraded charge is being considered.
The legal distinction between murder and manslaughter generally depends on factors such as a defendant’s alleged intent and the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators have not publicly explained why Rodgers was initially charged with manslaughter or disclosed whether they believe the stabbing was intentional, reckless or committed during a rapidly escalating confrontation.
Jordan had developed a following in Houston’s music community through her work as Judy World and Play Girl Judy. Her sudden death prompted messages of grief and support from relatives, fans and members of the local community.
Her brother, Travion Walker, described Jordan as an inspiration to the people around her and said she had been passionate about music from an early age. He thanked members of the community and Jordan’s supporters for the messages of love the family received following her death.
Jordan leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. Her family established an online fundraiser to help provide financial support for the child as relatives cope with the unexpected loss.
Family members also announced plans for a balloon release in Jordan’s memory. The gathering is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 17, at Crestmont Park in Houston. Friends, fans and community members are expected to gather to honor Jordan’s life and show support for her surviving relatives.
The investigation remains active. Police have not released additional information about the suspected weapon, whether other people witnessed the entire confrontation or what may have caused the dispute between Jordan and Rodgers.
Rodgers will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations through the court system. No information about a plea, bond amount or upcoming court appearance was immediately available in the initial reports.
Houston police and Harris County prosecutors are expected to continue reviewing witness statements, physical evidence and any available surveillance or cellphone footage as they determine the full sequence of events that resulted in Jordan’s death.
