Woman steals car from a dealer, leads high-speed chase, then jumps into water

MIAMI, FL – A high-speed police chase ended dramatically in Miami-Dade on Thursday after a woman allegedly stole a car from a dealership and attempted to evade law enforcement by jumping into a pond. The woman, identified as 27-year-old Melina Logan, was test-driving a 2024 Honda Civic at Honda of South Miami when she reportedly made off with the vehicle.

According to Miami-Dade Police, Logan seized her chance to flee when the salesperson momentarily stepped away. A police helicopter was promptly dispatched and managed to locate the stolen car, initiating the pursuit. Law enforcement officers, including Miami-Dade Police and Florida Highway Patrol, were seen in aerial footage chasing the silver Civic on the Palmetto Expressway southbound. The footage revealed the car speeding, weaving through traffic, and abruptly cutting off other vehicles.

The chase took a turn for the worse when Logan reportedly lost control of the car, resulting in a collision with several vehicles. One of the victims, a man named Kenneth, described how his Mercedes was rear-ended by the fleeing Honda, pushing him under a semi-truck. Fortunately, the semi-truck came to a halt, preventing further damage.

The pursuit concluded near Northwest 25th Street in Doral, where Logan abandoned the car on a ramp and jumped into a nearby waterway in a bid to escape the pursuing officers. Despite officers throwing two ropes to Logan, she refused to grab them, leading several officers to jump into the water to retrieve her.

Eyewitness Rosy Daniel, who was watching the incident unfold during her lunch break, recounted how Logan attempted to swim away from the officers. During the ensuing struggle, Logan allegedly scratched one officer on both arms and briefly pushed another underwater. Eventually, officers managed to secure Logan, who was then handcuffed and escorted to a police car.

The incident led to the temporary closure of the ramp, causing significant traffic delays in the area. Logan now faces charges of battery of a police officer and grand theft of a vehicle.
