Police booked the girl on a second-degree murder charge after her 15-year-old brother was found dead inside a home.
EDMOND, OK — An 11-year-old girl was arrested after her 15-year-old brother was fatally shot at an Edmond home, police said, in a case authorities described as an ongoing investigation involving two juveniles.
Edmond police said the girl was taken into custody shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, and transported to a juvenile detention facility. She was booked on a charge of second-degree murder. Her name has not been released because she is a minor, and authorities have also withheld the identity of her brother.
The investigation began shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, when officers responded to a reported shooting at a home in the 1100 block of Lapwing Road. Police said officers found the 15-year-old boy inside the residence. He had died from his injuries.
Police initially said at least one other person was inside the home when the shooting occurred and that investigators were working to determine what happened before the boy’s death. Authorities described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there was no indication of a broader threat to the community.
By early Thursday, investigators had arrested the boy’s 11-year-old sister in connection with the shooting. Police have not publicly described the evidence that led to her arrest or explained the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A motive, if investigators have identified one, has not been released.
ABC News reported that the children’s mother was not at the home when the shooting occurred. According to a recording of police and fire radio traffic cited by the network, the mother told investigators that her daughter had called her and said someone had shot her son. Police have not publicly released a full account of what the girl told investigators.
The Edmond Police Department said it would not release identifying information because the case involves juveniles. The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office also said state law limits the information authorities can make public because of the girl’s age.
Police said in a statement that they recognized the case as a heartbreaking situation for the family and expressed sympathy as relatives grieve. Authorities have not announced additional arrests or released further details about how the shooting occurred.
