Police identified a person of interest after four people who apparently knew one another were found shot inside a Forbes Road home.
CROWDERS, NC — Two people were killed and two others suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday after police found four shooting victims inside a home in southern Gaston County, authorities said.
Gaston County Communications received a 911 call reporting a shooting near the 2600 block of Forbes Road at about 8:43 a.m. Sept. 10, according to the Gaston County Police Department. Patrol officers arrived about five minutes later and found four victims inside the residence. Officers secured the scene and began lifesaving measures until fire and emergency medical personnel arrived.
Police later said two of the victims died and two others were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities had not publicly identified the victims as of Friday afternoon. Police also said they had identified a person of interest but did not release that person’s name or describe the person’s suspected role in the shooting.
Investigators believe the people involved knew one another and described the shooting as an isolated incident. Police said there was no ongoing threat to the surrounding community. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what led to the gunfire or explained the relationships among the people involved.
The shooting brought a large emergency and investigative response to Forbes Road, near U.S. Highway 321 and not far from the North Carolina-South Carolina state line. Police initially asked residents to avoid the area while detectives and crime scene personnel processed the property. Local television crews reported seeing multiple officers and emergency personnel around the home as the investigation continued.
Neighbors described an unusual and unsettling scene in an area where they said serious trouble was uncommon. Chris Turner told WBTV he saw police and medical vehicles rushing toward the area. Loretta Forbes, who lives next to the property, said she learned about the shooting after receiving a worried phone call from her daughter in Mississippi.
Jennifer Greene told local reporters she knew a woman who lived at the home and became concerned when the woman did not arrive at work Thursday. Greene went to the scene looking for information before planning to check at the hospital. Her account reflected the confusion surrounding the shooting during its early hours, when police had not yet released the victims’ conditions.
WSOC-TV reported that a construction crew working nearby said workers heard several gunshots. That account has not been independently confirmed by police. Investigators have not publicly released information about a weapon, a possible motive or the events immediately preceding the shooting.
Police said detectives remained actively involved in the investigation. WCCB reported that authorities were not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting, while officials continued to withhold the identity of the person of interest. No arrest or criminal charge had been publicly announced in the verified reports reviewed Friday.
The conditions of the two surviving victims had not been publicly updated as of Friday afternoon. Gaston County police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department or Crime Stoppers as detectives continued working to establish what happened inside the Forbes Road residence.
