Prosecutors say the teenager will be tried as an adult after one woman was killed and another was wounded on Detroit’s east side.
DETROIT, MI — A 15-year-old Detroit boy has been charged with first-degree murder and other felonies in connection with an Aug. 21 shooting at an east-side liquor store that killed Faith Williams and wounded another woman, according to prosecutors and court records.
Isaiah Lamar Gordon faces one count of first-degree murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder and four counts of felony firearm. Prosecutors say Gordon will be tried as an adult. He was arraigned Aug. 29 in 36th District Court and was ordered held at the Juvenile Detention Facility while the case moves forward.
Detroit police were called shortly after 11:10 p.m. Aug. 21 to Eastside Liquor in the 15500 block of East Warren Avenue. Officers found Williams inside the store with a gunshot wound and another woman, 29, wounded outside. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Local reports citing the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office identified Williams as 65. CBS Detroit reported her age as 60. Authorities have otherwise consistently identified Williams as the woman who died in the shooting. The condition of the surviving woman was not detailed in the most recent reports reviewed Sunday.
Prosecutors allege Gordon fired a handgun at Williams and the other woman before also firing toward a passing vehicle occupied by two people. No injuries to the people in the vehicle were reported. Authorities said Gordon fled after the shooting.
Prosecutors said Gordon did not know the two women. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the shooting. The allegations against Gordon have not been proven in court, and the criminal case remains pending.
FOX 2 Detroit reported that Gordon’s brother brought him to Detroit police at the department’s Ninth Precinct on Aug. 22, one day after the shooting. The arrest followed the initial police response and investigation into the gunfire at the East Warren Avenue business.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a written statement that the alleged attack was “unprovoked and unimaginable.” She said her office was waiving Gordon to adult court and would seek to hold him accountable despite his age and personal circumstances.
Gordon’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8 for a probable cause conference, according to court records cited by local news organizations. WWJ Newsradio reported that a preliminary examination is scheduled for Sept. 15. The charges remain allegations unless and until they are proven in court.
