The early Saturday collision with a flatbed semi-truck temporarily closed several blocks of U.S. 1 as troopers investigated.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A man driving a Dodge pickup truck died Saturday morning after crashing into a flatbed semi-truck on U.S. 1 in southwest Miami-Dade, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at about 6:37 a.m. Aug. 29 at U.S. 1 and Southwest 184th Street. Troopers said the collision sparked a small fire in the pickup’s engine compartment. The pickup driver died at the scene, while the driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
Authorities closed U.S. 1 between Southwest 183rd Street and Southwest 186th Street while investigators worked at the scene. The closure caused traffic delays in the area before the roadway later reopened.
Surveillance video obtained by WSVN showed the Dodge pickup traveling through the intersection before striking the flatbed truck. The station reported that the pickup appeared to pass through a red light and narrowly miss another vehicle before the collision. The Florida Highway Patrol had not publicly released a final determination about the cause of the crash.
The impact left the pickup heavily damaged and scattered debris across the roadway. Troopers said the fire was concentrated in the Dodge’s engine compartment. The semi-truck driver escaped injury, according to the Highway Patrol.
A manager at a nearby gas station told local television reporters that crashes have happened in the area before, though he described Saturday’s collision as unusually severe. Hours after the crash, WSVN reported that people believed to be relatives or friends of the victim placed a memorial near the intersection.
The identity of the pickup driver had not been publicly released as of the latest reports. Authorities also had not announced whether speed or any other factor had been formally determined to have contributed to the collision.
U.S. 1 reopened after investigators cleared the scene and the damaged vehicle was removed. The Florida Highway Patrol continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
