MIAMI. FL — A 17-year-old boy died after an early-morning shooting Saturday in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, authorities said, as police continued working to determine what led to the gunfire.
Miami Fire Rescue crews were dispatched shortly before 2 a.m. Sept. 19 to the area of Northwest 23rd Court and Northwest 38th Street. Fire rescue officials said crews responded to a report involving a 17-year-old with a gunshot wound. The teenager was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in extremely critical condition and later died from his injuries.
The shooting prompted a large police response in the neighborhood. Officers closed part of Northwest 23rd Court near 38th Street while detectives and crime scene investigators worked in the area. Police had not publicly identified the teenager as of Sunday morning.
Miami Fire Rescue said a 45-year-old woman was also taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for evaluation after the shooting. Officials said she had no reported injuries. Authorities have not explained her connection to the teenager or what role, if any, she may have had in the events surrounding the shooting.
Investigators spent hours at the scene Saturday gathering evidence and documenting the area. Local 10 News reported that police tape surrounded a home that appeared to be a focus of the investigation and that crime scene investigators were seen moving through the area with equipment.
Neighbors interviewed by Local 10 News reported hearing multiple gunshots, followed by yelling and the sound of people running. One neighbor said he heard about seven shots. Police have not publicly confirmed the number of shots fired or released details establishing the sequence of events.
Authorities also have not announced whether investigators have identified a suspect or person of interest. No arrest had been reported in connection with the shooting as of Sunday, and police had not disclosed a possible motive. Miami police said the circumstances leading to the shooting remained under investigation.
The shooting occurred near Miami Jackson Senior High School, according to local reports, though authorities have not said the incident was connected to the school. The gunfire happened during the overnight hours when classes were not in session.
