A teen photographer plummets to his death on a hike

HANKSVILLE, UT – A tragic accident claimed the life of a 19-year-old hiker in Utah last weekend. Jonathan Fielding, a recent transplant to the state, was taking photographs at the scenic Moonscape Overlook when he fatally fell.

Fielding, who resided in Orem, Utah, about three hours from the accident site, was hiking with friends near Hanksville when the incident occurred. His family expressed that although his passing was sudden and shocking, they find solace in the fact that he was engaged in an activity he loved, capturing the beauty of the Utah wilderness.

Rebecca Fielding, Jonathan’s sister, described the incident as a “tragic accident” and a warning for others. She took to social media to caution hikers and photographers about the potential dangers of their pursuits, emphasizing that no view is worth the risk and the subsequent pain endured by loved ones and rescuers.

A fundraising page set up for the Fielding family described Jonathan as a “great example of selfless love.” He leaves behind his parents, grandparents, and five sisters.

Originally from Missouri, Fielding was a high school pole vaulter and an Eagle Scout. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His obituary highlighted his caring nature and his ability to genuinely connect with others, stating that despite his short life, his impact on others was significant. He was cherished by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
