Six Broward sheriff’s deputies and one Plantation police officer were involved, officials said.
DAVIE, FL — A suspect wanted by Broward authorities was shot and killed Monday evening after deputies and a Plantation police officer tried to arrest him near businesses on Stirling Road, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said.
The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to a busy stretch near the 6300 block of Stirling Road in Davie. Officials said members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office fugitive and gang unit had been searching for the man before spotting him at a gas station. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, a common outside review step in police use-of-force cases requested by local agencies.
Authorities said the encounter began shortly after 7 p.m. Monday at a Wawa at 6350 Stirling Road, where deputies saw the suspect pumping gas. Tony said deputies moved in after recognizing the man as a person they had been seeking. The sheriff said the suspect was wanted for fleeing and eluding and that investigators had DNA evidence linking him to other cases, though officials did not give details about those cases Monday night. Tony said the man was armed and was told to give up the gun. “Given a multitude of commands to let go of the firearm,” Tony said, officers spent more than a minute trying to get him to release it after the confrontation began.
Investigators said the suspect ran from the gas station on foot while carrying the firearm. Deputies caught up with him in the parking lot of a nearby McDonald’s, where officials said he resisted arrest and officers were unable to disarm him. Tony said the officers made a tactical retreat while continuing to order the suspect to drop the weapon. Authorities said the suspect then pointed the firearm at officers, who opened fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials had not released his name as of late Monday. They also had not said which officer or deputy fired the shot that killed him.
Six Broward sheriff’s deputies and one Plantation police officer were involved in the shooting, officials said. Tony said no bystanders were hurt. The sheriff said deputies suffered only minor cuts and scrapes during the struggle. Authorities were still reviewing whether the suspect fired any shots at law enforcement. A witness who did not want to be identified said she heard about 20 shots and then saw officers, undercover units and helicopters moving into the area. The scene stretched across multiple blocks along Stirling Road as investigators marked evidence and blocked traffic near the gas station and restaurant.
The shooting unfolded in a commercial corridor lined with gas stations, restaurants and shops near the Davie and Hollywood area. Stirling Road is a major east-west route in Broward County, and Monday’s response brought marked patrol cars, unmarked vehicles and aerial support to a place where drivers and customers were still nearby. Authorities did not report injuries to people inside the businesses. Officials also did not say whether the suspect was alone, whether any vehicle was searched or whether body camera footage would be released. Tony said his account was based in part on his review of body-worn camera video.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will review the shooting and provide findings to prosecutors or local officials when its investigation is complete. BSO is also expected to review the actions of its deputies under agency policy. The Plantation Police Department may conduct its own internal review because one of its officers was involved. No charges against any officer had been announced Monday night. Officials did not give a timeline for when the suspect’s identity, the names of the officers involved or more details about the underlying cases would be released.
The immediate focus late Monday remained on the evidence at the scene and the sequence of events before the gunfire. Tony said the officers repeatedly ordered the suspect to release the gun before shots were fired. The sheriff said the confrontation moved quickly from the gas pumps to a nearby parking lot as authorities tried to take the man into custody. Witnesses described a sudden wave of police activity around businesses that are normally busy in the evening. Investigators remained in the area after dark as they collected evidence and reviewed video from body cameras and nearby businesses.
The investigation remained active Tuesday, with FDLE reviewing the fatal shooting and local agencies awaiting its findings. Officials had not announced the suspect’s name or a date for the next public update.
