Basketball coach dead after drowning accident

KEY WEST, FL – A highly regarded high school basketball coach and educator, Dexter Butler, was discovered lifeless in a storm drain near a school gymnasium, according to local authorities.

The Florida Keys Police Department and the Monroe County School District confirmed the tragic incident involving the 38-year-old Butler, which occurred on Saturday, March 2. The school district expressed its profound sorrow over the loss of a cherished member of their community.

The Monroe County School District described Butler’s passing as a “heartrending accident” that has deeply affected the close-knit community. “The Monroe County School District mourns the loss of our esteemed teacher and coach, Dexter Butler, who tragically lost his life on Saturday,” the school district stated, extending its heartfelt condolences to his family and the numerous students who knew and admired him.

The Key West Police Department verified to media outlets that the father of two lost his life after an unfortunate fall into a storm drain near the school gymnasium, leading to his drowning. Authorities were alerted on Saturday morning regarding a body in a storm drain near the school’s gymnasium. The police have ruled out any foul play in the incident.

Butler, a teacher at Horace O’Bryant Middle School in Key West, Florida, was remembered fondly by students and colleagues on Monday. A memorial was set up in honor of the much-loved educator, with students and staff leaving flowers, cards, and notes of support.

“Today, our school community mourned the loss of Mr. Dexter Butler, a valued member of our family,” the school district stated. “His kindness, guidance, and warm smile will remain etched in our memories.”

The school district also informed that counselors were made available at both Key West High and Horace O’Bryant Middle School on Monday to assist students and staff in coping with the loss.
