BMW driver leaves passenger to die after crashing into a pole

STATEN ISLAND, NY – In a fatal incident on Staten Island, a 25-year-old BMW driver fled the scene of a high-speed crash. The man driving ultimately left his 26-year-old passenger to die at the scene, according to reports by the local police and sources close to the situation.

The driver was allegedly speeding down Goethals Road North, near the Jules Drive intersection in Graniteville around 10:10 p.m. on Monday. He lost control of the vehicle, veered onto the sidewalk and collided with a utility pole and fire hydrant.

The impact led to the car spinning out of control and ejecting the backseat passenger, identified as 26-year-old Usman Chugahtai of Port Richmond, from the vehicle. As per police reports, the driver then fled the scene on foot after taking off the license plates from the wreckage.

Chugahtai, who lived approximately 2 miles away from the scene of the accident, was pronounced dead when Emergency Medical Services (EMS) finally arrived. Another 23-year-old passenger was transported to the Richmond University Medical Center, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.

As revealed by photos obtained from the Staten Island Advance, the aftermath of the incident involved the car careening through several backyard fences, leaving a path of destruction. As of Tuesday evening, there had been no arrests associated with the hit-and-run case.
