Brevard Homicide Agent Killed Responding to Shooting

Kevin Morris, 55, died after a wrong-way driver struck his sheriff’s vehicle head-on on Interstate 95 near Titusville.

TITUSVILLE, FL — Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Agent Kevin Morris was killed late Saturday while responding to a deputy-involved shooting in Mims when a wrong-way driver struck his vehicle head-on on Interstate 95, authorities said.

Morris, 55, was traveling north on I-95 as part of the response to the shooting when a Nissan Sentra traveling south in the northbound lanes entered his path south of State Road 46, according to authorities. The collision killed Morris and the 26-year-old woman driving the other vehicle. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

The crash followed a separate emergency in Mims that began about 7:55 p.m. Oct. 10, when Brevard County deputies were called to Pine Avenue for a well-being check. The Sheriff’s Office said the son of a 79-year-old man reported that his father was threatening to harm himself. Deputies determined that the man met the criteria for an involuntary examination under Florida’s Baker Act and requested medical transportation.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey said two deputies remained with the man for more than an hour while waiting for transportation. Deputies had noticed a long gun inside the home and moved it away from him. When deputies later tried to help move the man from a medical chair, authorities said he pulled a handgun that had been concealed beneath him and pointed it toward the deputies.

The deputies gave verbal commands and then fired their weapons, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. Neither deputy was injured. Authorities had not released the man’s name or the identities of the deputies as of Sunday. The deputies were placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, a standard step following a deputy-involved shooting.

Morris was heading toward that investigation when the fatal traffic crash occurred. Authorities received a report of a wrong-way driver shortly after 11 p.m. Investigators said a witness saw the Nissan make a U-turn on I-95 near mile marker 223 before traveling south in the northbound lanes. Morris was driving a Sheriff’s Office sport utility vehicle north near mile marker 221 when the vehicles collided.

Both vehicles caught fire after the impact. Morris and the other driver were pronounced dead at the scene. Ivey said another sheriff’s agent traveling ahead of Morris narrowly avoided the wrong-way vehicle and reported it over the radio before the collision. Authorities had not publicly identified the woman Sunday.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators are working to determine why the woman was traveling in the wrong direction. Authorities said investigators were interviewing witnesses and expected toxicology testing to be part of the inquiry. No conclusion about the cause of the wrong-way driving had been announced.

Morris joined the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy on Feb. 2, 2021, and had served with the agency for more than five years. He previously worked for the Palm Bay Police Department from 2001 to 2012. The Sheriff’s Office said Morris received numerous commendations, service awards and a Life Saving Award during his law enforcement career.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Mims shooting and plans to forward its findings to the Brevard-Seminole State Attorney’s Office for an independent review of the deputies’ use of force. The Florida Highway Patrol is separately leading the investigation into the crash that killed Morris and the other driver. The Sheriff’s Office said additional information about arrangements for Morris will be released when available.
