Houston police said the 8-month-old boy remained critically injured after the Halloween night shooting at a northwest Houston apartment.
HOUSTON, TX — A 52-year-old father fatally shot his infant son’s grandmother and critically wounded the 8-month-old boy before dying by suicide at a northwest Houston apartment on Halloween night, police said.
Houston police said officers responded about 7:35 p.m. Oct. 31 to an apartment in the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard. Officers found a woman and a man with gunshot wounds, while the injured infant had been taken to a hospital. Police said evidence at the scene indicated the man had shot the woman and baby before shooting himself.
The man had gone to the apartment to deliver diapers for his son, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations. Investigators said he became involved in an argument with the baby’s 19-year-old mother before the shooting. The young mother was not physically injured and carried her wounded child out of the apartment, police said.
Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the grandmother to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Police initially described the woman as about 40 years old, while a Houston Police Department update released Monday listed the female victim as 37. Authorities had not publicly explained the age discrepancy. The department said verification of her identity was pending with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. ABC13 reported Tuesday that the Harris County medical examiner’s office identified him as Rodney Bob. The Houston Police Department’s Monday release had said the man’s identity was still awaiting verification.
The baby, an 8-month-old boy, was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting. ABC13 reported that he remained in critical condition as of Monday. No more recent public update on his condition was available in the sources reviewed Tuesday.
Investigators have not announced a motive for the shooting. Police said the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide, but authorities have not publicly detailed what led to the argument or what happened immediately before the gunfire.
A neighbor told ABC13 that violent incidents were unusual at the apartment complex and said family members heard gunshots before children ran outside screaming. Houston police said multiple witnesses were at the scene as homicide detectives and crime scene investigators began their work.
The Houston Police Department Homicide Division continues to investigate the shooting. Authorities have asked anyone with additional information about the case to contact homicide investigators.
