Church Shooting: Woman Opens Fire at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church with Young Child in Tow

Houston, Texas- A woman armed with a long rifle and accompanied by a young child entered Lakewood Church on Sunday afternoon and began firing, according to Houston Police Chief Troy Finner. Two off-duty law enforcement officers engaged and struck the woman, resulting in her death on the scene. The woman, who was roughly 30-35 years old, also threatened to have a bomb, but no explosives were found in her vehicle or backpack, Finner said.

During the incident, a 5-year-old child was hit and is currently in critical condition at a local hospital, added Finner. Additionally, a 57-year-old man who was not believed to be connected to the incident, was shot in the leg and is seeking treatment at a hospital.

Finner commended the officers for their swift actions, stating, “She had a long gun and it could have been a lot worse, but they stepped up and they did their job, and I want to thank them for that.” An investigation into the shooting is underway and both law enforcement officers will be placed on administrative leave while the probe is ongoing.

Speaking during a news conference, Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen, mentioned that the shooting took place “in between services,” noting that the timing of the incident likely helped prevent further injuries and damage. Osteen also expressed relief that the shooting did not occur during the 11 o’clock service, as it could have resulted in more severe consequences.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also issued a statement, expressing condolences to those impacted by the tragic shooting and stating that places of worship are sacred. He assured that he has been in contact with local and state officials to bring swift justice to the person who committed the act.

A parishioner at the scene described hearing multiple shots fired and being instructed to run by a church usher. The White House officials are tracking the shooting and working to obtain more information.

Lakewood Church, now located in what used to be a sports arena, was founded by Osteen’s father in the 1950s. This is a developing story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
