Deal Done: Saber Interactive Sells for $500 Million – What You Need to Know

Los Angeles, CA – Saber Interactive, a prominent developer and publisher known for projects like “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake,” has recently been acquired by Embracer Group. This acquisition, valued at $500 million, includes Saber Interactive and some of its owned studios, such as 4A Studios and Zen Studios. The sale follows reports from Bloomberg and updates on the company’s website indicating an impending change in ownership.

According to VGC, the sale was made to a private investor group under Beacon Interactive, led by Saber Interactive co-founder Matthew Karch. While some studios will remain under Saber’s ownership, Embracer will retain ownership of several companies, including Tripwire and Aspyr. Interestingly, the “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” remake, initially an Aspyr project, has now become a part of Saber Interactive’s portfolio.

As part of the deal, Embracer will retain publishing rights to certain games in development, with a few projects to be developed jointly with Beacon Interactive. This shift in ownership comes on the heels of significant layoffs within Embracer Group’s various studios and the cancellation of nearly 30 games over a six-month period. The company’s acquisition streak has left many industry observers questioning its strategy and impact on the gaming landscape.

Overall, Saber Interactive’s sale signifies a significant restructuring within the gaming industry, with implications for ongoing projects and future collaborations. The industry will be closely watching how this acquisition reshapes the gaming landscape and influences future developments in the gaming world.
