Los Angeles, California – Former late-night talk show host Jay Leno has been appointed as the conservator of his wife Mavis Leno’s estate amidst her ongoing battle with dementia. According to court documents, Leno filed a petition for conservatorship in January, and the request was granted during a recent hearing.
The court’s decision was based on evidence indicating that Mavis Leno is unable to manage her financial affairs and may be susceptible to undue influence. Mavis reportedly consented to the ruling and did not object to the conservatorship of her estate.
During the hearing, Judge Brenda J. Penny expressed understanding for the difficult situation, affirming that Leno’s actions were appropriate. Leno shared that he is in the process of estate planning and reviewing his wife’s will as part of the conservatorship.
Mavis Leno, a philanthropist, has been diagnosed with dementia, a progressive neurocognitive disorder. Court documents revealed that her cognitive function has been declining over the years, leading to the need for a conservatorship of her estate.
Despite her condition, Mavis Leno has moments of disorientation where she may not recognize her husband or recall her date of birth. Her court-appointed attorney, Ronald E. Ostrin, highlighted her cognitive impairment but noted that she still retains a charming personality and can communicate effectively.
Ostrin recommended approving Leno’s conservatorship petition, emphasizing that his actions are necessary for the protection and well-being of both Jay and Mavis Leno. The couple, who do not have children, are focused on managing Mavis’ assets and ensuring her future financial security.
