Investigators said the woman opened fire on a group outside a family home before deputies shot her early Monday.
CUDAHY, CA — Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a woman early Monday after investigators said she pulled out a gun and opened fire on a group during a domestic violence incident in Cudahy, leaving the suspect and two other people hospitalized.
The shooting unfolded about 4:20 a.m. in the 4900 block of Live Oak Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators said the confrontation followed an earlier domestic violence incident in the city of Los Angeles and continued after a victim went to her family’s home in Cudahy. Authorities were still working Monday to determine what led to the violence and had not publicly identified the woman who was shot by deputies.
Investigators said deputies from the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station arrived at the apartment complex and encountered a confrontation involving the female suspect, the victim and two other people. The argument escalated when the suspect pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the group, according to information released by investigators.
Lt. German Ochoa said two East Los Angeles deputies who were at the scene reacted to the gunfire and shot at the suspect, striking her at least once. Authorities have not released the number of rounds fired by the woman or the deputies, and officials have not said whether both deputies fired their weapons. No deputies were injured.
The female suspect was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition, according to an updated account of the shooting. Two other people who were shot were also hospitalized in stable condition. Earlier reports said a girl was among those taken from the scene for medical treatment, but authorities had not released detailed information about the victims or publicly clarified all of their relationships to one another.
Video from above the neighborhood showed investigators concentrating on a white sedan parked near the scene. The vehicle appeared to have multiple bullet holes in its rear window. Authorities had not publicly explained Monday which gunfire struck the vehicle or whether it was considered evidence in determining the sequence of shots.
The incident began with what authorities described as a domestic violence matter in Los Angeles. Investigators said the victim later reached her family’s residence on Live Oak Street in Cudahy, where the subsequent confrontation occurred. Officials had not released further details about the earlier incident, including what prompted the victim to leave Los Angeles or how the suspect arrived at the Cudahy location.
The shooting prompted a law enforcement response and an investigation around the Live Oak Street property. Detectives were working to establish the sequence of events, including what happened before deputies arrived, the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s alleged gunfire and the deputies’ response. The Sheriff’s Department investigates shootings involving its personnel, while other county agencies can conduct separate reviews as the evidence is collected and analyzed.
Authorities had not announced an arrest or criminal charges as of Monday, and the identities of the suspect and the two other people who were shot had not been released. Investigators said the case remained active as detectives continued examining evidence and determining what led to the confrontation.
