Police say a dispute after a night out escalated outside a home, leaving 48-year-old Tori Harris dead and another man charged.
SMYRNA, GA — A night that began with friends going out to dinner ended with a fatal shooting outside a Cobb County-area home after an argument over a guest leaving the gathering, according to Smyrna police.
Tori Harris, 48, was killed early Nov. 30, 2025, outside his home in the Vinings Brooke subdivision. Police identified Nikia Williams, 50, as the man accused in the shooting. Williams later surrendered at the Cobb County Jail and was charged with murder and aggravated assault, authorities said.
Investigators said Harris and roughly half a dozen friends had gone to dinner Saturday night before returning to Harris’ home, where the group continued talking into the early morning. Police said the gathering turned confrontational after Harris asked Williams to leave the residence.
According to witness accounts provided to police, Williams refused to leave. Smyrna Police Lt. Meredith Holt said the disagreement developed from a verbal altercation into a physical struggle. The confrontation eventually moved outside the home, where authorities say Williams produced a firearm.
Witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot. When officers arrived, they found Harris dead on the pavement near the walkway leading to the front door, police said. Authorities have not released additional details about the injuries beyond saying Harris was struck by one gunshot.
Police said Williams left the scene before officers arrived, prompting investigators to search for him during the following days. His attorney later contacted authorities and indicated that Williams planned to surrender. Williams turned himself in at the Cobb County Jail on the Wednesday following the shooting.
Holt said police considered the surrender a safer outcome than having officers attempt to locate and arrest Williams through a tactical operation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what caused the initial disagreement inside the home or why the confrontation escalated to gunfire.
Police also have not detailed the relationship between Harris and Williams beyond describing those at the gathering as acquaintances who were friendly with one another. Investigators had not announced a motive beyond the dispute that police say began after Harris asked Williams to leave.
Neighbors described Harris to FOX 5 Atlanta as friendly and well-liked. Public memorial notices identified him as a 48-year-old Mableton resident. Messages posted after his death remembered him for his warmth, optimism and ability to connect with others. Several colleagues said he made a strong impression through his work and encouragement of people around him.
A celebration of life for Harris was held Dec. 6, 2025, at Saint Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, according to his published obituary. The available reporting does not establish a final outcome in the criminal case against Williams. The allegations against him remain accusations unless proven in court.
