Police said the 29-year-old suspect fled officers on Ocean Drive before hitting a child on the sidewalk and leaving the scene.
MIAMI BEACH, FL — A 29-year-old man has been arrested nearly two weeks after police say he struck a 10-year-old girl with a dirt bike while fleeing officers on Ocean Drive, leaving the child injured on a sidewalk.
Mandrell Ceydrec Rolle Jr., of Pembroke Pines, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Aug. 22 incident, Miami Beach police said. He faces one count each of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, reckless driving and resisting an officer without violence. Police announced the arrest Thursday.
The incident began around 7 p.m. Aug. 22, when police received multiple 911 calls reporting four dirt bike riders traveling recklessly and at high speeds along Collins Avenue in Miami Beach’s Art Deco District, according to the department. Responding officers located the group and said they also observed the riders operating recklessly.
Police said the riders continued to Ocean Drive and stopped in the 700 block. Officers approached the group on foot and took one rider, identified as Kasshun Williams, into custody without incident. Rolle allegedly saw the approaching officers and accelerated away despite repeated commands to stop, according to police.
As Rolle fled, police said, his dirt bike struck a girl who was on the sidewalk with her mother. The impact knocked the child to the ground and injured her elbow and leg. Miami Beach Fire Department personnel treated her at the scene. Authorities have not announced any more serious injuries or provided additional information about her recovery.
Miami Beach police identified the girl as 10 years old in information released with the arrest announcement. Earlier local news reports about the Aug. 22 incident described the child as 11. The department’s more recent account was used for the age in its announcement of Rolle’s arrest.
Investigators later identified Rolle as the suspected rider and obtained a warrant for his arrest, police said. The department said detectives also learned that Rolle was on federal probation for felony possession of a machine gun. He was taken into custody with assistance from the City of Miami Police Department’s Tactical Robbery Unit.
Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones said the department has “zero tolerance for reckless behavior that endangers the lives of our residents and visitors.” He said riding recklessly, striking a child and leaving without providing aid was unacceptable and that police would use available resources to identify people accused of endangering others in the city.
As of Thursday morning, Rolle was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,650 bond, according to Local 10. The charges are allegations, and the available reports did not provide information about a plea, an attorney representing Rolle or a scheduled court appearance.
