**E. coli Outbreak Alert: Risky Walnuts Sold in San Diego Stores – Check Your Pantry Now**

San Diego, California – County Public Health officials in San Diego are urging residents to discard walnuts linked to a national E. coli outbreak. The contaminated walnuts were sold in 10 local natural food stores and co-ops, leading to two reported illnesses from the same strain of E. coli.

The Shiga toxin-producing E. coli found in the walnuts poses a risk of hospitalization and even death. Gibson Farms Inc., the producer of the walnuts, has issued a nationwide recall in response to the outbreak, which primarily affected individuals who consumed Gibson Farms walnuts in multiple states.

These walnuts were sold either halved or in pieces from bulk bins starting as early as October 1, 2023. Additionally, some stores may have repackaged and sold the walnuts in individual bags or takeout containers.

Local authorities are collaborating with the affected stores to ensure the removal of the recalled walnuts from shelves and the disinfection of storage bins. Among the stores that received the contaminated walnuts are Jimbos Naturally in San Diego, Lazy Acres Market in San Diego and Carlsbad, Ocean Beach Co-Op, Frazier Farms Market in La Mesa and Vista, and Sun Organic Farm in San Marcos.

Individuals who believe they have purchased the affected walnuts are advised not to consume them. It is recommended to dispose of the walnuts and thoroughly clean any containers or surfaces that may have come into contact with the product with hot, soapy water or in the dishwasher.

E. coli infections can result in severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting within a few days of exposure. Prompt medical attention is necessary if symptoms arise, as the bacteria can lead to serious kidney complications requiring hospitalization.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that illnesses associated with the tainted walnuts have also been documented in Washington. Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and caution in handling and consuming potentially contaminated food items to prevent further illnesses and outbreaks.
