Hualien, Taiwan – A devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake has left a trail of destruction on Taiwan’s east coast. The powerful tremors resulted in buildings partially collapsing, landslides, and trapped individuals in highway tunnels. As of now, nine individuals have been confirmed dead, and over 900 have sustained injuries.
The quake, the strongest in 25 years in Taiwan, struck near Hualien city, triggering tsunami warnings and causing widespread damage across the region. Rescue teams are currently working tirelessly to extricate the trapped individuals, with reports indicating that many have been successfully rescued.
The National Fire Agency in Taiwan revealed that people are stranded in two road tunnels along the perilous Suhua Highway, a route known for its challenging terrain. The earthquake also set off numerous landslides, further complicating rescue efforts and hindering transportation.
Authorities have reported over 77 individuals still trapped under debris, with the disaster leading to power outages and infrastructure damage. The U.S. Geological Survey noted the earthquake’s epicenter was located 18km south of Hualien city.
In addition to the physical toll, the quake has caused emotional distress and uncertainty among residents. Taiwan’s president-elect, Lai Ching-te, surveyed the affected areas, acknowledging the immense challenges faced by the community in the aftermath of the disaster.
