ATLANTA, GA — A gunman remained at large after police said he fired a rifle at a vehicle carrying four people in southwest Atlanta early Monday, prompting an hourslong SWAT operation that ended without an arrest.
Atlanta police said the shooting happened shortly before 4 a.m. Sept. 14 in the 1300 block of Hartford Avenue. Investigators said an argument took place before the man pulled out a rifle and opened fire on the vehicle. No injuries were reported among the four people inside, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations.
Police initially believed the gunman might have gone into a nearby home after the shooting. Officers called in a SWAT team and established a police presence around Hartford Avenue and Sylvan Road as authorities tried to locate him. Several roads in the area were blocked while tactical officers searched.
The operation continued for several hours before officers entered and cleared the home where they believed the man could be hiding. The search ended shortly before 9:30 a.m. after police determined that he was not inside, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Authorities did not announce an arrest after the operation ended.
Police had not publicly released the suspect’s identity as of the latest reports. WSB-TV reported that police said they knew who the man was and expected him to face four counts of aggravated assault and a reckless conduct charge if arrested. Authorities also said there was an outstanding warrant connected to a previous supervision violation. Local reports differed on whether that warrant involved probation or parole.
The police response unfolded near Sylvan Hills Middle School, which remained open during the operation. Atlanta Public Schools said the school would continue normal operations while authorities worked nearby. Officers were available to assist students traveling to the campus, and families were advised through local reporting to avoid areas affected by police activity.
The four people in the targeted car were able to get away without reported injuries. Police have not publicly released their identities or provided additional details about what led to the argument before the shooting. Authorities also have not publicly disclosed a motive beyond the reported dispute that preceded the gunfire.
