**Half-Staff Honors:** American and Illinois Flags Lowered to Honor Fallen Peace Officers

Chicago, Illinois – In a solemn gesture of respect and remembrance, the American flag and the State of Illinois flag will be flown at half-staff on Wednesday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. This day, recognized annually on May 15 by federal law, pays tribute to the courageous local, state, and federal peace officers who have lost their lives or been disabled in the line of duty.

During Police Week, a time to honor the bravery of the nation’s police officers and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, flags across the state will be lowered from sunrise to sunset. This observance, one of two federal occasions that require the American flag to be at half-staff, is a solemn reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by those in law enforcement.

Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, Peace Officers Memorial Day serves as a poignant moment to reflect on the dedication and service of law enforcement officers. Last year alone, 60 officers lost their lives in the line of duty according to the FBI, with additional fatalities and accidents reported this year as well.

“Police Week gives us an important opportunity to recognize and express gratitude to the men and women of courage and selflessness who put others before themselves, regardless of the risks involved,” stated FBI Director Christopher Wray. The week serves as a time to honor these heroes who work tirelessly to protect communities and uphold the law.

The significance of Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week extends beyond flags at half-staff, reminding us of the inherent dangers faced by those who serve and protect. It is a time to honor the fallen, support the living, and express gratitude for the unwavering dedication of law enforcement officers across the country.
