Heart Attack, Not Drowsy Driving, Led to “9-1-1” Crew Member Rico Priem’s Tragic Death – Shocking Autopsy Report Revealed

Los Angeles, California – A crew member working on the TV show “9-1-1” tragically passed away last month while driving home after a long work day. An autopsy report has revealed that 66-year-old Rico Priem did not die from drowsy driving as initially suspected but from a sudden heart attack.

Priem’s fatal accident occurred as he was driving home around 4:30 a.m. His SUV veered off the 57 freeway, struck a tree, and overturned. The incident highlighted concerns raised by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) regarding the risks associated with long work hours in the entertainment industry.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Priem’s autopsy report indicated that his cause of death was attributed to sudden cardiac dysfunction, with no fatal traumatic injuries present. The toxicology report also confirmed the absence of alcohol or drugs in Priem’s system at the time of the accident.

A member of Local 80 and an experienced grip in the television industry, Priem was known for his work on various TV shows such as “Major Crimes,” “Deadwood,” and “Six Feet Under.” He was nearing retirement before the unfortunate incident occurred.

In response to Priem’s passing, IATSE expressed deep sorrow and emphasized its ongoing commitment to safety in the workplace. 20th Television, the production company behind “9-1-1,” and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers also offered their condolences following the tragic event.

The union contract includes provisions for workers who feel too fatigued to drive home after long shifts, allowing them to request alternative transportation or accommodations without fear of retaliation. Concerns have been raised about excessively long shifts, including those that extend from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, known as “Fraturdays.”

As investigations continue into Priem’s untimely death, the industry remains focused on implementing measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all workers in the entertainment sector. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing issues related to long working hours and fatigue in the industry.
