Man arrested after killing father with meat cleaver

In a horrifying incident in Yonkers, New York, a man is alleged to have brutally murdered his father using a meat cleaver. The accused, August Velasco, 47, is said to have repeatedly attacked his 76-year-old father in their home. The police have not disclosed what might have triggered the deadly assault.

The victim, Jose Raul Velasco, suffered extensive injuries to his head, face, back, and hands. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the authorities. The suspected murder weapon was discovered in the house by the responding officers.

The accused, August Velasco, was arrested on the day of the incident and is currently facing a charge of second-degree murder. He was arraigned in Yonkers City Court on Wednesday afternoon. His defense attorney has sought a psychiatric examination, according to a report by The Journal News/lohud.com.

According to Yonkers Police Sgt. Frank DiDomizio, there were no prior instances of domestic violence reported at the Velasco household.

Expressing his grief over the tragic incident, Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said that it is profoundly saddening when a life is taken, especially when the individuals involved are family members. He also praised the police officers and detectives for their prompt response and comprehensive investigation.
