Man Arrested For Two Armed Sexual Assaults 10 Days After Prison Release

Police said the suspect was released from prison 10 days before the first of two reported sexual assaults.

BROOKLYN PARK, MN — Police arrested a 25-year-old man Wednesday after two women reported being sexually assaulted at gunpoint inside their homes in separate early-morning attacks less than a week apart.

Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley identified the suspect as Darius Ahmadd Olson-Baker. Police said he was taken into custody after officers and SWAT personnel served a search warrant at a home in the 7600 block of Hampshire Avenue North. He remained in the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause of criminal sexual conduct, aggravated robbery and burglary. Formal charges had not been filed as of Wednesday night.

The arrest followed a large search involving detectives, patrol officers and other law enforcement personnel. Officers canvassed about 40 blocks, went door to door and asked residents to provide surveillance recordings or other information that could help investigators. Police said calls from community members helped officers locate Olson-Baker hours after officials publicly identified him as a suspect.

The latest reported assault occurred Wednesday in the 7500 block of Jersey Avenue North. Officers were called to the area at about 6:30 a.m. Police said a man had entered the home through an unlocked door about an hour earlier, pointed a gun at a woman and sexually assaulted her. The man left before officers arrived.

Police believe the same person entered another home in the 7600 block of Hampshire Avenue North at about 5 a.m. Friday. In that case, authorities said the armed intruder demanded money and sexually assaulted a woman. The two locations are only a few blocks apart, and investigators said the circumstances of the attacks were similar.

Bruley said investigators believed the intruder entered both homes through unlocked doors. Police have not released the women’s names, and this article is withholding identifying details to protect their privacy. Authorities also have not disclosed what evidence led investigators to connect Olson-Baker to both cases.

Police said Olson-Baker had been released from prison July 7 after serving time for a firearm offense. The first reported home invasion occurred 10 days later. Court records cited by local news organizations show previous Minnesota convictions involving weapons and assault, but those earlier cases do not establish guilt in the new allegations.

Bruley said Olson-Baker had previous contact with Brooklyn Park police and had displayed similar behavior involving entry into victims’ homes years earlier. Authorities did not immediately provide complete records or further details about those incidents. Investigators also had not said publicly how the gun allegedly used in the recent assaults was obtained.

Police said Olson-Baker’s mother helped officers arrange for him to leave the Hampshire Avenue home before his arrest. No one inside the residence was injured during the police operation. Olson-Baker is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court, and information about an attorney representing him was not immediately available.

The investigation remains active as police prepare reports for prosecutors to review. Authorities had not announced when charging decisions would be made or whether Olson-Baker would make an initial court appearance.
