Police identified a 36-year-old man as a person of interest and said the case appears to involve relatives.
LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 61-year-old woman who was found inside a home in Laguna Beach’s Rim Rock Canyon area Monday morning.
Officers responded shortly after 11 a.m. to the 1300 block of Dunning Drive for a death investigation, according to the Laguna Beach Police Department. They found Angela Caprioli dead at the scene. Authorities said Caprioli was from Maine, but they did not release information about how long she had been staying at the home or what brought her to California.
Police identified a 36-year-old man as a person of interest in the investigation. Laguna Beach police Lt. Jesse Schmidt said the man and Caprioli were related and that the incident appeared to be domestic-related. Officials did not identify the man or describe the nature of the relationship.
No arrest had been publicly confirmed in connection with Caprioli’s death as of Thursday. Police also had not announced any criminal charges. A person of interest is someone investigators believe may have information relevant to a case and is not necessarily accused of a crime.
The cause and manner of Caprioli’s death have not been released. Authorities did not say whether investigators found a weapon, signs of a struggle or other evidence inside the house. Police have not publicly described the death as a homicide.
The Laguna Beach Police Department said investigators were working with the Orange County Crime Lab to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. Police said the investigation remained active and that no continuing threat to the public had been identified.
Neighbors told CBS Los Angeles that a man in his 30s had moved into the home about six months earlier. One neighbor, Dustin Petit, said the man generally kept to himself and had little contact with people living nearby. Those observations have not been presented by police as evidence of criminal activity.
Video from outside the property showed police tape surrounding the home. CBS Los Angeles reported that officers waited for a search warrant before entering the residence during the early stages of the investigation. Images from the scene also showed damage near a window, though authorities have not said whether it was connected to Caprioli’s death.
Police asked anyone with information that could assist investigators to contact Detective Corporal Alan Cintas. Authorities said additional details would be released when the investigation allows.
