Man Found Dead After Shooting Inside Dick’s Sporting Goods Store

Deputies detained two people minutes after an employee reported gunfire inside Dick’s House of Sport at the Brandon Exchange.

BRANDON, FL — A man was found dead inside a fitting room at Dick’s House of Sport after a shooting Friday afternoon, and Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies detained two people believed to have been involved.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said its emergency dispatch center received a call from a store employee at 4:28 p.m. July 10. Deputies arrived within four minutes and found the man dead in the fitting room. Two minutes later, deputies detained two people outside the store. Authorities had not publicly identified the man or the detained individuals as of Saturday.

Investigators said preliminary evidence showed that three people entered the sporting goods store together and went into a fitting room. Employees heard a gunshot moments later, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Surveillance video showed two members of the group running from the store and into the parking lot after the gunfire.

Deputies detained the two people in the parking lot as investigators secured the scene. The Sheriff’s Office described them as individuals believed to be involved but did not announce arrests or criminal charges. Officials also had not disclosed who fired the weapon, what led to the shooting or whether a firearm was recovered.

At least 33 deputies responded, including members of the agency’s K-9 Unit. Authorities said there was no continuing threat to shoppers or the surrounding community. The Brandon Exchange remained open and continued normal operations through its scheduled closing time, even as the investigation continued inside and near the store.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said deputies’ training allowed them to respond quickly, secure the scene and detain the two people within minutes. Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer also briefed reporters at the shopping center as investigators began reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence.

The Sheriff’s Office has classified the case as an active death investigation. That description does not establish whether investigators believe the shooting was intentional, accidental or legally justified. Authorities have not released details about the relationship among the three people or why they entered the fitting room together.

The shooting occurred inside Dick’s House of Sport, a large-format sporting goods store at the Brandon Exchange shopping center in Hillsborough County. Investigators did not report injuries to employees, shoppers or responding deputies. Officials also did not say how many shots were fired beyond employee reports of a gunshot.

Authorities were continuing to examine video, physical evidence and the accounts of the two detained people. The Sheriff’s Office said further information would be released by its Public Affairs Office as the investigation develops.
