Family Says Caregiver Stole Elderly Woman’s Personal Information

Home surveillance footage allegedly shows the worker examining financial records and jewelry belonging to a 95-year-old Murrieta resident.

MURRIETA, CA — A caregiver hired to assist a 95-year-old woman was recorded searching through the woman’s personal documents and jewelry inside her home, according to the woman’s family and video reviewed by KTLA.

The family said the caregiver photographed sensitive financial records during the incident, raising concerns that the woman’s personal information may have been taken or misused. The alleged conduct occurred in June at the woman’s Murrieta home, according to the family’s account. The woman’s name was not publicly released.

The caregiver worked for Right at Home in Temecula, a company that provides in-home assistance, according to the report. The worker’s identity also was not released. It was not immediately clear how long the caregiver had been assigned to the woman or what duties she was expected to perform inside the home.

Video from inside the residence allegedly shows the caregiver going through papers and other belongings while the woman was under her care. The family said the footage included images of the worker handling financial documents and examining jewelry. The available reporting did not establish whether any money, jewelry or other physical property was taken.

The family characterized the conduct as a serious breach of trust because the caregiver had access to the home and to a woman who depended on others for assistance. Relatives said they became concerned after reviewing the surveillance recording, though details about what prompted them to check the footage were not released.

It remained unclear Saturday whether investigators had determined that the photographed information was used to open accounts, make purchases or conduct other transactions. No criminal charge or arrest connected to the family’s allegation had been publicly confirmed in the available reports.

Right at Home’s response to the allegations was not detailed in the material available Saturday. It also was not clear whether the caregiver remained employed, had been suspended or was removed from the assignment. The company’s Temecula office serves communities in southwestern Riverside County.

The footage documents the family’s allegation, but it does not by itself establish a criminal offense or prove that the caregiver used the information. Authorities would need to review the recording, interview those involved and examine relevant financial records before determining whether a crime occurred.

The family is seeking answers about the caregiver’s actions and whether the woman’s information was compromised. No additional findings, charges or scheduled court proceedings had been announced as of Saturday.
