Man killed by SWAT team after armed standoff

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A man was fatally shot by Indianapolis police after engaging in a standoff with a SWAT team and discharging his firearm, according to authorities on Monday.

The incident occurred Sunday evening when the man, later identified as Luis Duran-Ruano, 31, was reported to be firing shots into the air on the city’s west side, as per the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Despite attempts by officers to prevent Duran-Ruano from fleeing the scene in a vehicle, a brief chase ensued which concluded outside a residence.

Duran-Ruano then exited his vehicle, brandishing a firearm which he held to his own head. A SWAT team was dispatched to the location where a sergeant initiated communication with Duran-Ruano, attempting to persuade him to disarm. However, after approximately an hour, Duran-Ruano began to move away from the property.

In response, SWAT officers deployed non-lethal bean bag rounds. Duran-Ruano retaliated by firing his weapon, prompting three officers to return fire, resulting in his fatal injury. A firearm was later recovered from the scene.

Duran-Ruano was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The shooting is currently under investigation by the IMPD Critical Incident Response Team and internal affairs. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as per standard procedure.
