Man Stabbed After Reported Unwanted Advance

The Friday afternoon confrontation near State and Lake streets drew police tape across a busy downtown block.

CHICAGO, IL — Chicago police were investigating after a Friday afternoon confrontation in the Loop that began with a report of unwanted contact and ended with a man cut near North State Street and East Lake Street.

The case drew attention because police changed major parts of the early account. Initial reports said two men had been stabbed after a 24-year-old woman reported contact from a 31-year-old man. A later police update said one man, age 25, was injured in the stabbing, while Area 3 detectives continued reviewing the encounter.

The incident happened about 4 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of North State Street, a busy stretch near theWit Hotel, the Chicago Theatre area and several CTA stations. Police said the 24-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk when the 31-year-old man made what officers later described as “unwanted contact” with her. Police first classified the report more seriously, then revised the wording. After that contact, the 31-year-old man became involved in a physical fight with a 25-year-old man, police said. During the fight, a 36-year-old woman in the area pulled out a knife, according to police. Early police information said the 31-year-old man was stabbed in the right eye and the 25-year-old man was cut on the left wrist. A later update said only the 25-year-old man was injured.

Police said the 25-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition with a cut to his wrist. The 36-year-old woman was also taken to Northwestern for observation. The 24-year-old woman refused medical care at the scene. A knife was recovered, police said. Officials did not immediately release the names of the people involved. Police also did not explain why the injury count changed from two stabbing victims to one. The revised account left several points unclear, including the exact role of the 36-year-old woman, whether the 25-year-old man had intervened in the encounter and what charges, if any, detectives may seek.

The scene unfolded in one of Chicago’s most visible downtown corridors, where office workers, shoppers, tourists and transit riders move through the Loop throughout the day. Police tape was seen stretched across part of North State Street as officers gathered information and blocked off space near State and Lake. The area includes nearby CTA rail access and heavy foot traffic, which made the afternoon response highly visible. The case also stood out because the first police description shifted within hours. Authorities moved away from the earlier classification and later used the phrase “unwanted contact” to describe what the 24-year-old woman reported. Police did not give more detail about the contact.

Area 3 detectives were assigned to the investigation. As of the latest police update, no charges had been publicly announced in connection with the stabbing or the reported unwanted contact. Investigators were expected to review statements from those involved, any witness accounts and any available video from the area. The recovered knife will likely be part of that review. Police did not say whether anyone was in custody, and they did not release a court date or charging decision. The changing account means the final police report may be important in setting out what investigators believe happened before, during and after the fight.

The downtown scene cleared after officers processed the area, but the case remained open because the public version of events had changed. Police said the 25-year-old man was stable after being treated for the wrist injury. The woman who first reported unwanted contact did not go to the hospital. The 36-year-old woman was taken for observation, and police did not release her condition. No further update had been issued on whether detectives determined that the contact, the fight or the knife injury would lead to criminal charges.

The investigation now rests with Area 3 detectives, who have not announced arrests or charges. The next milestone is a police update or charging decision clarifying the revised injury count and the conduct under review.
