One Dead, One Critical After Crawfish Boil Shooting

Houston police said an argument at a family gathering on Bretshire Drive led to gunfire early Sunday.

HOUSTON, TX — One man was killed and another was critically injured early Sunday after gunfire broke out during a family crawfish boil in northeast Houston, police said.

Houston police said the shooting happened during a gathering in the 7700 block of Bretshire Drive, near Homestead Road. Officers were called to the scene around 1:30 a.m. and found that two adult men had been shot after an altercation. A suspect was detained at the scene, but police had not publicly released that person’s name or announced charges by Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said the gathering was a family event when an argument began among people attending the crawfish boil. Police said the dispute involved the suspect and two adult male victims before shots were fired. One man was shot in the chest. The other man was shot in the neck and chest. Officers said one of the victims died at the scene, behind a vehicle parked in front of the home. The second victim was driven to a hospital by a woman who had been at the gathering.

The wounded man remained in critical condition Sunday, police said. Officials said one of the victims was 22 years old, but they had not released the names of either man. Investigators also had not said what started the argument or whether the men were related to each other. Police said detectives were interviewing witnesses and reviewing the scene to determine the order of events before the gunfire. The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division is leading the investigation.

The shooting added another homicide investigation to a weekend marked by several violent incidents across the Houston area. In this case, police described the scene as a private gathering rather than a random attack. The home sits in a residential part of northeast Houston, close to Homestead Road and not far from Parker Road and Wayside Drive. Officers did not report any threat to the wider neighborhood after the suspect was detained.

Police had not said Sunday whether prosecutors had accepted charges or whether the detained person would be booked into jail. Detectives were expected to present evidence to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as the investigation moved forward. That process could include witness statements, physical evidence from the scene and medical updates on the surviving victim. The Harris County medical examiner’s office was expected to confirm the identity of the man who died after relatives were notified.

Neighbors and people at the scene woke to police cars, crime scene tape and investigators working outside the home. Officers remained in the area for several hours after the shooting. Police said the shooting followed an altercation, but they did not describe the words exchanged or any earlier trouble at the gathering. The lack of a released motive left relatives and neighbors waiting for more information as detectives worked to separate witness accounts from confirmed evidence.

The case remained open Sunday afternoon. Police had one suspect detained, one man dead and another man fighting for his life at a hospital as homicide detectives continued their review.
