FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The handling of a measles outbreak at an elementary school by Florida’s surgeon general has sparked controversy, with criticism directed at his decision to allow unvaccinated children to attend class despite federal guidelines recommending their exclusion. Dr. Joseph Ladapo, known for his skepticism towards COVID-19 vaccines, sent a letter to parents at Manatee Bay Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale after several students contracted the highly contagious virus. In the letter, Dr. Ladapo mentioned that unvaccinated students at a school with a measles outbreak are usually advised to stay home for three weeks due to the high likelihood of infection, however, he stated that the state would not make this a mandate at the moment. This decision comes as 33 out of 1,067 students at Manatee Bay are not fully vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, despite the effectiveness of the vaccine and the affluent background of the school community.
