Nurse Charged With Four Felonies After Patient Sexual Assault Allegations

Three women accused former EvergreenHealth Monroe nurse Stephen Odingo of inappropriate sexual contact while they were patients at the hospital.

MONROE, WA — A former EvergreenHealth Monroe nurse faces four felony counts of indecent liberties after three women accused him of sexually assaulting them while they were patients under his care, according to charging documents and local news reports.

Stephen Odingo, 61, is charged with four counts of indecent liberties stemming from alleged encounters with patients between July 2024 and January 2025. The allegations led to a police investigation, his suspension from the hospital and his resignation while an internal investigation was underway. The criminal charges are allegations, and the case has not resulted in a finding of guilt.

The first reported incident occurred in July 2024, according to charging documents described by KIRO 7. A patient told investigators that Odingo asked her to remove clothing and then touched intimate areas of her body in a way she believed was sexual and unrelated to her care. The woman reported the conduct, and investigators said Odingo was removed from her care team. Hospital records later reviewed by investigators indicated staff addressed the complaint with Odingo.

A second patient reported concerns in January 2025. She told investigators that Odingo repeatedly tried to hug her and hold her hand while she was hospitalized. She said he later asked her to remove her bra during what he described as a body check. When she refused, she alleged that he attempted to remove it himself. The woman reported the encounter to hospital staff, and Odingo was removed from her care, according to reports describing the charging documents.

Days later, a third patient made another report. The woman had limited mobility while receiving treatment and needed help with some routine activities, according to accounts of the court documents. She told investigators that Odingo initially engaged in conduct she thought was intended to comfort her but later kissed her and subjected her to unwanted intimate touching. The woman said she told him no during part of the encounter and later reported what happened to hospital personnel.

The hospital’s chief nursing officer contacted police in January 2025 after the third patient’s allegations were reported, according to accounts of the investigation. Police were also told about earlier complaints involving Odingo. The hospital suspended him after the latest report and began an internal investigation. Odingo submitted his resignation later that month while that review was underway.

EvergreenHealth Monroe said Odingo is no longer employed by the hospital and that patient safety remains a priority. The hospital also said it has cooperated with the Monroe Police Department and the Washington State Department of Health. It declined to provide additional details because the matter remains an ongoing legal case.

Police later contacted Odingo at his Marysville home as the criminal investigation continued. According to reporting based on court documents, he requested an attorney and declined to provide investigators with a recorded statement. When KIRO 7 later went to his home seeking a response to the charges, the station reported that a person at the residence said Odingo would not comment.

The case is proceeding in Snohomish County Superior Court. The court’s official daily calendar listed Stephen Tonny Odingo for an initial arraignment at 9 a.m. Oct. 7 in case No. 26-1-01044-31. The publicly available calendar did not provide an outcome of that hearing at the time of this report.

The identities of the patients are not being published. The four felony charges remain pending, and the allegations described in charging documents have not been proven at trial.
