Mother Of Five Dies After Brighton Park Shooting

The 32-year-old was critically wounded Oct. 22 when someone in a gray sedan opened fire beside her vehicle.

CHICAGO, IL — A 32-year-old woman has died nearly two weeks after she was shot in the head while riding in a vehicle on Chicago’s Southwest Side, turning the investigation into a homicide case, police said Thursday.

The shooting happened about 9:31 a.m. Oct. 22 in the 2400 block of West 47th Street in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Chicago police said a gray sedan pulled alongside the vehicle carrying the woman and someone inside the sedan opened fire. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead Thursday.

The woman was riding as a passenger when the shooting occurred. Police said the person responsible fled southbound on Western Avenue after the gunfire. No other injuries were reported. Area One detectives are investigating the killing.

Ald. Raymond Lopez, who represents the 15th Ward, said after the shooting that investigators were looking at apparent road rage as a possible cause. Police did not immediately confirm that motive, and the circumstances leading to the shooting remain under investigation.

Lopez said witnesses described the suspected vehicle as a gray, four-door Toyota Scion with a rear bike rack. He also said police were reviewing surveillance footage from the area as investigators tried to determine the route the vehicle took before and after the shooting.

The woman’s husband and two of their three children were in the vehicle when the shooting occurred, Lopez previously told the Chicago Sun-Times. None of them was reported injured. He said the husband was working with investigators to identify public and private cameras that might have recorded what happened.

Surveillance footage obtained by ABC7 Chicago after the shooting appeared to show the victim’s vehicle being followed shortly before the gunfire. Lopez said at the time that the encounter could have continued for several blocks before reaching the area near 47th Street and Western Avenue.

Authorities have not announced an arrest in connection with the shooting. Police have also not released any new information confirming what prompted the encounter or identifying the person who fired the shots.

With the woman’s death, detectives are now conducting a homicide investigation. Area One investigators continued working the case Thursday, nearly two weeks after the shooting.
