Mother, Two Children Dead After Bar Shooting

Police said the woman first fired at her husband outside a West Valley bar before returning to a Phoenix home.

GLENDALE, AZ — A Phoenix mother killed her two children and herself early Monday after police said she fired at her husband outside a Glendale bar and sent threatening text messages about the children.

The deaths followed a fast-moving chain of events that began just after midnight at Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill near 61st Avenue and Bell Road. Police identified the mother as 38-year-old Andrea Clarice Davis. Her husband, 39-year-old Nolan Davis, was not hurt. A 36-year-old woman who was with him outside the bar was shot and hospitalized with injuries police said were not life-threatening.

Glendale police spokesperson Jose Santiago said officers were first called to the bar after gunfire was reported. Nolan Davis told police his wife had driven there in a gray SUV and fired several shots toward him and the woman before leaving. Santiago said investigators were still working to determine the full relationship between the people at the bar. “They knew each other, but we do not know the extent of how they knew each other,” Santiago said. The woman was trying to leave when she was struck in the back of the head, police said.

After the bar shooting, police said Nolan Davis told officers that Andrea Davis had sent messages saying she would hurt their children. He told investigators she and the children were at a home near 49th Avenue and Paradise Lane in Phoenix, about two miles from the bar. Officers from Glendale then alerted Phoenix police. Santiago said Nolan Davis later received another message that included a photo showing one of the children bleeding from the head. That information sent officers to the Phoenix home around 2:30 a.m.

Police said officers forced their way into the home because they believed the children were in immediate danger. Inside, they found Andrea Davis and the two children dead. People close to the family identified the children as 10-year-old Austin and 18-month-old Andolan. Police said Andrea Davis is believed to have shot both children before turning the gun on herself. Authorities had not announced a motive Monday. Phoenix police took over the investigation into the deaths at the home, while Glendale police continued investigating the bar shooting.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said the scene was painful for officers, detectives and firefighters who responded. “No one wants to see harm caused to children,” Fernandez said. Police said they found no prior domestic violence calls involving the family and no earlier behavioral health incidents tied to the home. Santiago also said Glendale police had no prior incidents involving the family. Investigators were reviewing the sequence of messages, the shooting at the bar and the events inside the home as part of the larger case.

Family members and friends described shock over the deaths and grief for the children. Felicia Queen, a cousin of Nolan Davis, said the children had their whole lives ahead of them. Queen also said the family was struggling to understand what happened. Andrea Davis’ friend Amy Bowers said Andrea and Nolan Davis had been together for 12 years and had bought the Phoenix house together. Bowers said the marriage had changed over the past year and that Andrea Davis had been under strain, though police had not confirmed a motive or a full timeline of events before Monday’s shootings.

Outside the Phoenix home, signs of the children’s lives remained behind crime tape as investigators processed the scene. A stroller and toy car were visible in the garage, and chalk drawings could be seen on the driveway. Bowers remembered Austin as a child who liked visiting her home and playing Mario Party. She described Andolan as sweet. Queen said Nolan Davis was a good father and said Andrea Davis also had been known by relatives as a loving mother before the violence. Police said the father now faces the loss of both children and his wife.

No arrests were expected in the deaths at the home because the suspected shooter died at the scene. Police said the surviving woman from the bar shooting was expected to recover. Investigators had not released her name Monday. Authorities also had not said whether the gun used at the bar was the same weapon used at the home. Detectives in both cities were expected to continue gathering evidence, reviewing messages and interviewing witnesses to complete reports on the shootings.

The case remained under investigation Monday, with Glendale police handling the bar shooting and Phoenix police handling the deaths of Andrea Davis and the two children. No additional victims had been reported by late Monday.
