Newport Police Seek Three Suspects After Man Shot 15 times

The victim’s family says Trey Iles survived after being shot multiple times during an early morning encounter.

NEWPORT, KY — Newport police are searching for three people wanted in connection with a May 9 shooting near 10th and Monmouth streets that left Trey Iles hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.

Arrest warrants have been issued as investigators continue to look for Tianca Combs, 30; Terry Moses, 26; and Kortney Alford, 30. Police said the three are wanted on separate charges tied to the same shooting. The case has drawn wider attention after Iles’ family said he was shot 15 times at close range and survived after quick help at the scene.

The shooting happened just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of 10th and Monmouth streets in Newport, police said. Officers who responded found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to UC Medical Center, where police said he was listed in stable condition. Family members later identified him as Trey Iles. “He’s grateful to be alive; he realizes that he should have been dead,” Harley Iles, Trey’s uncle, said. Harley Iles said the shooting happened during what began as a simple trip to a convenience store. He said relatives believe there may have been an argument before the gunfire, but the full sequence of events remains under investigation.

Police identified Combs, Moses and Alford as the wanted suspects. Combs is wanted on an attempted murder charge, Moses is wanted on a complicity to attempted murder charge and Alford is wanted on a facilitation of attempted murder charge, police said. Authorities said the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous. Police have not publicly released a full account of what they believe each person did before, during or after the shooting. They also have not said whether the victim and suspects knew each other. Harley Iles said his nephew was shot at point-blank range. “What I do know is that he was shot 15 times at point-blank range; the guy stood over top of him and shot him,” he said.

The shooting took place in a busy part of Newport, a Northern Kentucky city across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. The intersection of 10th and Monmouth sits along a corridor with homes, small businesses and regular late-night traffic. Police have described the case as an active investigation centered on a shooting that left one person seriously injured. Family members said Trey Iles’ girlfriend, who is a nurse, helped keep him alive before he could be taken to the hospital. Harley Iles said Trey’s father told him that the girlfriend’s actions made the difference. “If Trey’s girlfriend wasn’t there, Trey would have died; he would have bled out right there on the floor,” Harley Iles said.

The warrants move the case into a search and arrest phase while detectives continue to gather evidence. Police have not announced arrests in the case or a court date for any of the three wanted people. If they are taken into custody, they would face the charges listed in the warrants and appear in court for early proceedings. Investigators have not released details on any recovered weapon, surveillance video or witness statements beyond the public appeal for help finding the suspects. The charges remain accusations unless proven in court. Newport police said the investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information about the suspects’ locations to contact Crime Stoppers.

Relatives said Trey Iles is recovering after being taken to the hospital. Harley Iles described his nephew as a young father and a person known for a warm personality. “Just the fact that he’s alive is a miracle, but the fact he’s talking and in good spirits, that’s even more of a miracle,” he said. The family has said Iles faces a long recovery. Support efforts have begun around medical bills and other expenses, including help from Harley Iles, who owns Harley Dogs in Covington. He said the family is focused on Trey’s recovery while police search for the three wanted people.

As of May 17, police were still looking for Combs, Moses and Alford. The next step in the case is locating the suspects and bringing them before a court on the warrants filed after the May 9 shooting.
