Off-Duty NYPD Officer Stabbed as Bronx Suspects Flee

Police were searching for two men after an off-duty officer was attacked Friday afternoon in the Norwood section of the Bronx.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — An off-duty New York Police Department officer was repeatedly stabbed Friday afternoon during an apparent robbery attempt in the Bronx, setting off a search for two suspects who fled the scene on an e-bike, according to police and published reports.

The attack happened shortly before 2 p.m. near Rochambeau Avenue and East 206th Street in the Norwood neighborhood. The officer was taken to Jacobi Medical Center after suffering multiple wounds. Early reports differed on the severity of his condition, with some sources describing him as critical while another later report said he was stable. No arrests had been announced Friday evening.

Investigators believe the confrontation began as the off-duty officer was near his vehicle. According to reports citing police sources, two men approached him and an attempted robbery followed. ABC7 reported that the officer was retrieving something from the trunk of his vehicle when the suspects approached him from behind. A struggle followed before the men escaped without taking anything.

Other reports said investigators believe the suspects were trying to take a chain from the officer. Authorities had not publicly released a detailed NYPD account of the confrontation by Friday evening, and some circumstances surrounding the attack remained preliminary. Reports also differed on the exact number and location of the officer’s wounds.

The officer was described by ABC7 as an NYPD detective who has been with the department since July 2016. News 12, citing a source close to the investigation, reported that he works at the 50th Precinct. The attack occurred within the neighboring 52nd Precinct’s boundaries in Norwood.

Police focused their search on two men who fled on an e-bike after the confrontation. ABC7 reported that investigators believed the suspects may also have been injured during the struggle and were checking hospitals around the city as part of the search. One suspect was described as shirtless and wearing black sweatpants and black sneakers. The other was described as wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants and black sneakers.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited the wounded officer at Jacobi Medical Center on Friday afternoon. The mayor’s updated public schedule listed a hospital visit with the commissioner, and local news cameras recorded Mamdani leaving the medical center amid a large police presence.

The stabbing also disrupted a previously scheduled City Hall and NYPD event. Mamdani and Tisch had been expected to appear at a 3 p.m. briefing at One Police Plaza to discuss quarterly crime statistics. That briefing was canceled following the attack, according to published reports.

The investigation remained active Friday evening as detectives worked to establish the full sequence of events and locate the two men. Authorities had not announced arrests or publicly identified either suspect, and police had not released a final account of what, if anything, was taken during the apparent robbery attempt.
