Boston, Massachusetts – A Boston police officer is on the road to recovery after being shot in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood. The incident occurred on Monday night, prompting a swift response from authorities.
According to Boston police Commissioner Michael Cox, officers received a 911 call reporting an armed individual near the intersection of Esmond and Bradshaw streets shortly before 9:35 p.m. As officers approached the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Avery Lewis from Dorchester, he fired a round at them. Fortunately, the officer who was hit in the chest was wearing a bulletproof vest, preventing more serious injuries.
Despite the danger they faced, the responding officers successfully arrested Lewis and secured a firearm at the scene. Commissioner Cox commended the officers for their bravery and restraint, highlighting the challenges they face in removing firearms from the streets and protecting the community.
The injured officer, who has served the department for two years, was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment. Commissioner Cox expressed relief that the officer’s injuries were non-life-threatening and thanked all the officers involved in capturing the suspect.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu visited the officer in the hospital, expressing gratitude for his safety and well-being. Lewis is set to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Tuesday, facing a long list of charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, and drug trafficking.
