Police arrested a 22-year-old suspect after gunfire followed two fights outside nightclubs near Camelback Road and Saddlebag Trail.
SCOTTSDALE, AZ — One person died and another remained critically injured after a shooting early Sunday in Old Town Scottsdale, where police said gunfire erupted after two separate fights outside nightclubs.
Scottsdale police responded around 1:15 a.m. Sept. 6 near Camelback Road and Saddlebag Trail. Both people who were shot were taken to a hospital, where one later died. Police said the second victim remained in critical condition but appeared to be improving. Authorities had not publicly identified either victim as of Monday morning.
Police arrested 22-year-old Jeremy La’Twan Campbell Jr. after a short foot chase. Investigators described Campbell as the lone suspected shooter and said they were not searching for additional suspects. Police said he was being booked on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The allegations against Campbell have not been proven in court.
Investigators said the violence followed two physical fights outside different nightclubs in the Old Town entertainment district. According to police, the fights occurred around 1 a.m. and 1:15 a.m. near Saddlebag Trail and Camelback Road. Officers broke up both confrontations, and investigators continued working to identify other people involved in the fights.
A firearm was recovered from a swimming pool at a nearby hotel after the shooting. Police said the weapon was undergoing testing to determine whether it was connected to the gunfire. Authorities had not announced the results of that testing or released further information about what investigators believe happened between the fights and the shooting.
Witness Daevon Lanier told Arizona’s Family that he was on a balcony with his older brother when he heard a series of noises that he initially thought were firecrackers. He said he then saw people running in different directions as police arrived. Lanier also recorded cellphone video showing the aftermath while officers responded below.
Police activity temporarily disrupted the area around Camelback Road as detectives and crime scene personnel investigated. Video from the scene showed numerous police vehicles near the nightlife district after the shooting. Police later said there was no continuing threat to the public and that Campbell appeared to be the only suspected shooter.
The shooting remained under investigation Monday. Police continued seeking information from people who witnessed either fight or the shooting and were reviewing available video and physical evidence. Campbell made an initial court appearance after his arrest, while the identities of the person who died and the surviving victim had not been publicly released.
