At least 103 people have been killed in a tragic boat accident in northern Nigeria, early morning on Monday . Reports of the accident, took place close to Niger state, confirmed that the victims – including children – were returning from an overnight wedding ceremony in the village of Egboti.
According to Usman Ibrahim, a resident of the area, the boat was believed to be overcrowded – carrying passengers and their bikes – when the incident occurred at 3am. Mr. Ibrahim also mentioned that location of the bodies is still unclear as some of them are still being searched for.
The accident has caused immense grief to the survivors and the families of the victims. Residents in Niger State have expressed rage and sorrow early on Monday after news of the tragedy had made way to them.
The cause of the disaster has yet to be ascertained. Following the tragedy, Nigerian government managed to quickly mobilize the search and rescue operations, providing medical assistance to survivors and victims’ families.
