Austin, Texas saw a surge in opioid-related calls on Monday, leading officials to respond to more than 30 suspected overdoses and four deaths, as reported by City of Austin Chief Medical Director Heidi Abraham during a media briefing.
The sudden increase prompted the deployment of a rapid response team consisting of ATCEMS, the Homeless Strategy Office, and Urban Alchemy to address the escalating situation, according to city officials.
City EMS Captain Christa Stedman mentioned during the briefing that the overdose cases observed were unusually lethal, with four fatalities suspected to be linked to the incidents. This spike in overdoses was described as unprecedented in recent years, indicating a potential concerning trend in the substances being circulated.
The impacted areas spanned the entire city, affecting various locations accessible to the general public, including businesses and residences. Medics advised the community to remain vigilant for signs of potential overdoses, such as shallow breathing, confusion, or changes in skin color.
