Three Men Shot Outside River North Nightclub in Chicago

One man was critically injured and two others were in good condition after the early Saturday shooting, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — Three men were shot during an altercation outside a nightclub in the River North neighborhood early Saturday, leaving one man critically injured and two others in good condition, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened about 3:40 a.m. Sept. 19 in the 100 block of West Erie Street, near North Clark Street, according to police. Investigators said the three men became involved in an altercation with one or more unidentified people before gunfire erupted. Police had not announced any arrests by Saturday morning.

A 24-year-old man was shot in the cheek and leg and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said. A 22-year-old man was shot in both legs and was listed in good condition. A 25-year-old man was shot in both legs and one hand and also was listed in good condition. All three were taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Police said at least one person involved in the confrontation pulled out a gun and opened fire. Authorities had not determined publicly whether more than one shooter was involved. The person or people responsible fled the area after the shooting, according to police.

The circumstances that led to the altercation remained unclear Saturday morning. Police had not released the names of the injured men or identified the nightclub involved. Authorities also had not disclosed whether the men knew the shooter or shooters before the confrontation.

ABC7 Chicago reported a heavy police presence near Clark and Erie streets after the shooting. Officers were seen examining shell casings in the roadway as investigators worked at the scene. Police did not immediately release information about how many shots were fired or whether a firearm had been recovered.

The shooting occurred in River North, a busy downtown neighborhood known for restaurants, bars and late-night businesses. Police have not said whether the confrontation began inside a business or entirely outside, and no additional injuries were reported in the initial accounts.

Area Three detectives are investigating the shooting. Police had not released a description of a suspect or suspects, and no additional information about possible arrests or the condition of the critically injured man had been announced as of Saturday morning.
