Police advise ‘drive at your own risk’ after serious spike in crash jacking

As the Oakland Police Department (OPD) continues to investigate a concerning number of armed robberies and carjackings across the city, they have released a public safety advisory to encourage drivers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. The warning ‘drive at your own risk’.

The assailants are using cars to crash into their targets and then waiting for them to pull over and get out to inspect damage to then have one of their group jump out and pull a gun to steal the car and possions of the victim.

With many reports at varying times of day throughout Oakland, OPD is closely monitoring the disturbing trend, collecting information on potential suspects and vehicles associated with the crimes. To minimize the risk of falling victim to these crimes, OPD has outlined a few precautionary measures for drivers.

First and foremost, it is recommended that drivers keep their doors locked and windows rolled up while driving, particularly in high-risk areas. If a driver is involved in an accident and is feeling unsafe, they should dial 911 straight away. If they suspect that they are being followed or are in danger, they are instructed to drive to the nearest police station or a populated, well-lit area to call the authorities. To reduce the chances of being targeted, drivers are encouraged to minimize distractions, be discreet with their possessions, and keep valuables out of sight.

If anyone has any information they believe to be related to the issue or if they happen to be a victim of a crime, the OPD has asked for them to phone 510-238-3326.
