Police Fatally Shoot Man Near Pub

Investigators said officers encountered 32-year-old Salaheddine Yagoub after callers reported a possibly armed man and a vehicle threatening pedestrians.

STOUGHTON, MA — A 32-year-old man died after Stoughton police shot him early Saturday during an encounter near a busy pub, after authorities said 911 callers reported a possibly armed man who had tried to strike pedestrians with a vehicle.

The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office identified the man as Salaheddine Yagoub, who authorities said had no known address. The shooting occurred after multiple 911 calls sent officers to the area of 37 Monk Street shortly after 12:30 a.m. The address is home to the Public House, a pub near Route 138. Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office are investigating the fatal shooting.

Authorities said the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center began receiving calls at about 12:33 a.m. reporting a man who might be armed outside the bar. According to the district attorney’s office, the man then entered a black Mazda CX-5 and was reported to have attempted to strike numerous pedestrians while driving in the area. Officials have not publicly released additional details explaining what happened between the arrival of officers and the gunfire.

Police encountered Yagoub on Monk Street, and officers shot him during the encounter, the district attorney’s office said. Officers immediately provided first aid before Yagoub was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. Authorities had not identified the officers involved in the shooting as of Saturday night or said how many officers fired their weapons.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene around Monk Street. A nearby resident told WBZ-TV that a rapid series of gunshots could be heard from the neighborhood. Another resident said he heard officers ordering a man to drop a gun before shots were fired. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether investigators recovered a firearm from Yagoub or provided a detailed account of what officers saw immediately before the shooting.

Video provided by witnesses to WCVB showed an argument involving several people before a vehicle backed rapidly around a corner and struck a parked car. The station reported that another portion of the video showed the vehicle moving away as police arrived. Witness video also appeared to show emergency responders providing aid after the shooting. Investigators have not released official video of the encounter or publicly described what evidence has been collected.

The incident unfolded near the Public House while people were still in the area. Patrons interviewed by WBZ-TV said they heard the gunfire while at the establishment. The business said the violence was connected to an incident on Monk Street rather than something that began inside the pub. It closed Saturday as police investigated and said it planned to reopen Sunday at noon.

No other injuries were reported, and the district attorney’s office said there was no continuing threat to the public. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges connected to the events before the shooting, and investigators have not released a full chronology explaining the reported confrontation, the vehicle’s movements or the circumstances that led officers to open fire.

The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation. Officials said the case remained active and ongoing Saturday night, with further findings, including details about the officers’ actions and the evidence recovered at the scene, still pending.
